Hello everyone! For those of you new to my blog, my name is Camille, and I am a Author Mentor Match R7 mentee hopeful. A full-time uni student, I find my escape in writing. When I'm not, you can find me reading (a given for any writer), fostering a new litter of kittens, or volunteering at my local book festival. I've been writing for 8 years, but only seriously in the last 5. What I have to show for this is one shelved project that I worked on in TeenPit and Die For Me, which I plan to submit to AMM.
Some of my favorite books are The Fever King, by Victoria Lee, Carry On by Rainbow Rowell, Half Bad by Sally Green, Wilder Girls by Rory Power, and Vicious by Victoria Schwab. Some of my favorite shows are Doctor Who, Black Mirror, the Flash, and a wide array of anime.
So, what exactly is my manuscript about? Die for Me is a YA speculative with sci-fi and dystopian elements. In an effort to combat overpopulation, Kat and Nic's government established the Vouching system, where one’s consciousness decides whether they would give their life to save another using advanced simulation technology. With a Vouch, you get perks. Namely, the right to live. Vouchless, or UnDesired, Kat is sent to a community with those like her and tasked to find someone who would give their life for her before she is forced to give her own. Desired by many, Nic is awarded the title of Immortal, and made the ruler of their country. Yet he is trapped, stuck between the fear of someone discovering he didn't really earn his position and the pressures of a group biding for power. With shaky alliances, unclear motivations, and a thirst for power, their simulations might soon become reality.
I think I would make a great mentee because of my dedication. This isn't my first time applying. That was back in Round 5, when I submitted with Die for Me with the belief that it was near it's final form. It wasn't until a rejection and about a year later did it finally click. The plot, the bones on which my story stood, weren't strong enough. With empty holes and storylines that lead to nowhere, I realized I had to make a change. So, I gutted all but 8 chapters of it and completely rewrote it from scratch. Though some of the original story still shines through, it has finally become something I am proud of.
It isn't without it's faults. I am apply for AMM because I know it has the tools to help me work through my patches of dry dialogue, deepen my characters, and give my manuscript a much needed coat of paint. I also hope to gain new insight into the publishing industry, especially as I've never queried before.
I'm excited to get to know everyone in this wonderful community. Happy writing!
