Today I will be reviewing The Coldest Girl in Coldtown by Holly Black. This novel is about a girl who lives in a world where vampires are a(new) part of society. She wakes up the night after the party to discover that everyone is dead(except her of course). As she begins to escape she discovers a vampire boy chained to a bed, and her ex who has gone "cold"(will turn into vampire if fed human blood within the next 88 days). She escapes with them and goes to the nearest Coldtown. Coldtowns are where captured vampires get placed. Once there she gets pulled into the vampires world and falls in love with one of the most dangerous vampires ever.
So, when I first picked up this book I thought that it was a sci-fi book about some deadly disease, based off of the description. I quickly realized that, no, in fact it was a vampire novel. I was fine with that so I continued reading. The beginning started out ok but it slowly became worse and worse, but i still stuck with it. At the ending, I honestly was shaking my head. It was terrible.
The main problem with this book is the protagonist. She is so stupid. She says and does the dumbest of things. I dont really want to give examples because they are spoilers but trust me on this, she is terrible. During the book, it is repeatedly said how the 'Thorn of Istra' is crazy and mad. So when you find out who that is, the author randomly puts quotations, and etc. to make him sound mad. These things come randomly and out of place. Also, the main character starts randomly laughing big huge laughs for no reason at the end out the book, kind of like the author is forcing their madness upon us. Another thing is how rushed the protagonist and another character's relationship is. They talked approximately 3 times the he gives her his deceased sister's necklace? And they say all of this romantic stuff to each other after only knowing each other for a few days and only having a few previous conversations? Really?
This whole book feels rushed. If Holly Black took a little bit more time with it and stretched it out a little bit more, it would have been way better. The book(near the end) seems like it wanted to go then this happened, then this happened, then this happened, with little transition.
I would not recommend this book because it has a terrible protagonist and it is rushed and kind of choppy.
