Seventeen-year-old Dara Roux and her two best friends, Mackenzie Yarborough and Jennifer Torres, the three collectively referred to as the F.I.G.'s (Females of Intellectual Genius) because each has an intelligence quotient in the genius range, have just returned from Frascati, Italy. It was there that their much-loved teacher and mentor, Carolina Lovel, discovered that her birth parents were gypsies and that she had a connection to the Voynich Manuscript, the most mysterious document in the world.
Now, with graduation from Wood Rose Orphanage and Academy for Young Women behind them, Dara asks her friends to help her locate her birth mother when she learns that she might be living in New York City. Relying on Dara’s gift for speaking and understanding foreign languages, the black and white images that stir musical cadences in Jennifer’s mind, and Mackenzie’s mathematical calculations that normally provide numerical solutions and answers to life’s most difficult questions, the determined young women tirelessly go from one address to another in search of Dara’s mother.
Their determination turns to desperation, however, as they encounter a dark hidden society more dangerous and terrifying than they could have imagined. It is there that Dara hopes to find out why she was abandoned in a candy store all those years ago.

Now, check out my review:
In the stunning sequel to The Cadence of Gypsies; Dara Roux, one of the F.I.G’s, has just returned from Italy with her friends. With her teacher Carolina happy to have found her birth parents and the F.I.G’s own graduation coming up, she is now ready to go on to college. Still, something doesn’t feel right. Inspired by Carolina’s journey, she decides to ask her friends for help in finding her own mother. But despite their skills, discovering her past won’t be as easy as she thinks when a hidden society emerges and dark gypsy magic arrives, making the search infinitely more difficult.
What a great sequel! Though it did start a bit slow with backstory to remind readers about what just happened, it launched itself off without waste and quickly intrigued me. I also love the continued involvement of gypsies throughout this book. When I first picked it up, I wrongly assumed the gypsy aspect of the first book won’t be there anymore because of the change is main character. But instead, the author only embraced gypsies even more in this book, keeping me interested and entertained.
Another part of this sequel that I really enjoyed was the character development. In the first book, the three F.I.G’s aren’t as touched upon as Carolina because they aren’t main characters. But in this book, you can clearly see them grow throughout the story. You can truly tell that they mature as they prepare for their next stage in life. But not only can you see how they grow, but you can also experience it. I loved the emotion that the author put into each character. Through her writing, you can really see each character’s thought process as they think things through with their intelligence or react to certain plot twists. I really enjoyed this part because the reader could really feel like they are experiencing the events of the book with the characters.
Lastly, I loved the overall atmosphere the story set. It’s amazing when authors are able to write a book with a mood because it allows readers to sink into the story. Mrs. Casey is clearly able to do that with book, which makes the reader feel like they are experiencing the story with the characters.
If you enjoy great sequels, this book is for you. Of course, don’t forget to read The Cadence of Gypsies first! Full of mystery, suspense, and a hint of gypsy magic, you won’t be able to put this series down!
